Book Recommendation: The Reason for God by Tim Keller

Every now and then, a book appears that gives voice to the silent questions and doubts many people hold.
Tim Keller’s The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Scepticism is such a book.
Tim Keller, the former pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, wrote this book.
He based it on years of talks with people from all walks of life.
They all wrestle with big questions about Christianity that many Christians don’t want to touch on.
He lived and worked in one of the world’s most secular cities.
He listened closely to people’s doubts, objections, and genuine struggles with faith.
This book is his thoughtful reply.
It doesn’t shut down questions; instead, it engages them with clarity, patience, and grace.
The first half of the book addresses common objections to Christianity.
You’ve likely heard these questions or even asked them yourself:
- “How can a loving God allow suffering?”
- “Isn’t Christianity too exclusive?”
- “Hasn’t science disproved Christianity?”
- “Isn’t the Bible unreliable?”
Tim Keller didn’t dismiss these concerns.
Instead, he took them seriously and showed that there are reasonable answers.
What I love is that he didn’t argue as if faith and reason were incompatible.
He proved that Christianity isn’t just wishful thinking.
It can also be intellectually credible and emotionally honest.
The second half of the book turns the question around: if belief in God is difficult, is unbelief any easier?
Tim Keller examined how every worldview, even secularism, relies on some form of faith.
He highlighted the beauty and unity of the Christian story.
It explains our desire for love, our sense of justice, and our hope for meaning like nothing else can.
One of the strengths of The Reason for God is its tone.
Tim Keller wrote with humility and respect.
He didn’t talk down to sceptics or make faith seem simple.
He recognised mystery, but he argued that Christianity provides the best answers to life’s big questions.
Why read this book?
- For your own faith. Even if we’ve been a Christian for years, it’s good to revisit the foundations of what we believe and why. This book can strengthen our faith.
- For conversations with others. We all have friends, family, or coworkers who are sceptical about Christianity. If we read this book, it will help us to engage thoughtfully. Plus, we’ll gain insight and understanding, so that we can respond calmly and openly.
- For seekers. If you’re curious about Christianity or have doubts, this book lets you ask tough questions. It invites you to see that faith in Christ is both reasonable and truly compelling.
Tim Keller shows that Christianity still touches our hearts and minds today.
In a world that often sees faith as outdated or irrational, his message is powerful.
He doesn’t promise simple answers.
Instead, he invites us to see Jesus in a new way.
This helps us understand how Jesus meets our deepest questions.
